02 · How we design

We zone by how the plant drinks, not by how the lawn looks.

A lawn wants two inches a week in July. A live oak wants deep watering once a month. An agave doesn't want anything after establishment. Putting them all on the same spray schedule is why so much water gets wasted in Austin — and why plants fail anyway.

We zone by plant type. Turf gets spray heads on a seasonal schedule. Beds and trees get drip, run longer and less often. Succulents and native grasses get their own low-flow loop, or no irrigation at all after year one. Each zone runs on its own schedule, controlled by a smart controller that reads local weather.

Four system types.

Almost every system we build is a combination — drip for beds and trees, spray for turf, and a smart controller that runs them all on their own schedule.

Drip systems

Inline emitter tubing and point-source emitters for beds, trees, and vegetable gardens. Lowest water waste, best for establishment and long-term plant health.

Spray systems

Pop-up spray heads with matched precipitation rate nozzles for turf areas. We spec rotary nozzles where the site allows — they use half the water and are far more wind-resistant.

Smart controllers

Rachio, Hunter Hydrawise, or Rain Bird with local weather data and EPA WaterSense certification. Programmed and monitored by us for the first year, no charge.

Backflow & permits

Licensed backflow prevention assembly, permit filing with the city, and annual test coordination. We handle the paperwork — you get the certification number.

A master-planned community in Cedar Park was running 14 controllers on independent schedules, wasting water and getting hit with stage-two restrictions. We consolidated to a single cloud-controlled network with 84 zones, retrofitted 62 spray heads to rotary nozzles, and installed flow sensors on every mainline. What clients ask us about water.

How much does a new irrigation system cost?
For a typical residential property — quarter-acre lot, front and back — a fully zoned drip and spray system with a smart controller runs $4,800–$9,500 installed, including permits, backflow prevention, and first-year programming. Larger properties and commercial systems scale up from there. We write fixed-price estimates, not ranges.
Can you retrofit my existing system instead of replacing it?
Almost always, yes. We audit the existing layout, test each zone for flow and coverage, and identify what can be kept. Most 10-to-15-year-old systems only need new heads, a new controller, and re-programming — which typically costs $1,200–$2,800 and saves 30–40% on water bills. We'll tell you straight if a full replacement is the better move.
What is a smart controller, and do I really need one?
A smart controller (Rachio, Hydrawise, or Rain Bird) uses local weather data to skip watering when it rains, adjusts for seasonal changes, and lets you control each zone individually from your phone. They typically pay for themselves in the first year through water savings. Most Austin rebate programs cover $100–$250 of the cost, and we file the rebate paperwork for you.
Do you repair broken irrigation systems, or only install new ones?
Both. Repairs are one of our most common service calls — a broken valve, a stuck head, a mainline leak, or a controller that won't turn on. Our weekday response SLA is four hours for leaks and pressure loss; standard repairs are usually scheduled within 48 hours.
How often should my system be audited?
Annually at minimum. We recommend a spring audit (before high season) and a fall winterization check (before the first freeze). Both are included free the first year after installation, and available as part of our maintenance contracts thereafter. Audits catch head misalignment, nozzle wear, valve sticking, and controller drift — the small things that add up to big water bills.
What happens during stage-two water restrictions?
Austin Water's stage-two rules limit spray irrigation to two days a week, restrict the hours you can water, and encourage drip systems. Our controllers are pre-programmed with the current restriction rules and can be updated remotely when stages change. Drip and hand watering are typically exempt — one more reason zoning matters.
Do you install rain barrels or rainwater harvesting?
Yes. We install rain barrels (50–500 gallons), cistern systems (1,000–10,000 gallons), and full rainwater harvesting with pumps and filtration for irrigation use. Austin offers rebates for rainwater harvesting through the WaterWise program, and we file the paperwork. Systems typically pay back in 4–7 years depending on capacity.
